The Man Who Lost Salt
Customers still lined up, but Shen could not bring himself to cook. He feared every dish would be technique without the home he remembered.
After closing, Uncle Zhou gave him an old pocket watch. Inside its cover were tiny words: **An aftertaste is not flavor. It is the bite you are willing to share.**
“Your father paid the ledger too,” Zhou said. “But he never treated it as a god. Failing to taste doesn't mean food has no flavor. Forgetting the past doesn't mean it never saved anyone.”
Shen sat until dawn. When the first light reached the kitchen, he made a plain pot of congee and served it to the night security guard.
The guard finished it and said, “This tastes like home.”
