Chapter One: Beyond Kilometer Twelve

The message had been sent twelve minutes after she disappeared three years earlier. “We already shot this once,” Lu Xiao said to Shen Mo. Someone laughed. The camera operator said his equipment had never rolled. The effects chief said not one charge had fired. Only the prop master, Tang Li, remained silent. Crouched by the rear bumper, she stared at the car's intact right mirror, her face drained of color. Shen Mo lifted his megaphone. “There is one rule today. The car does not stop, and the camera does not stop. No one calls cut before the finish.” On the second run, Lu Xiao abandoned the script. He braked hard at kilometer three. The instant the car stopped, gulls froze above the road and the cresting waves became sculptures of glass.
