Wanxing refused. She seized a brass lamp and swung it. The mundane weapon shattered. A spike pierced her shoulder, spraying blood across the ledger.
The book throbbed like a heart. Every red thread snapped taut and hoisted the collector into the air.
“Authorization blood!” he screamed. “You didn't inherit an asset. You inherited the accounts!”
The ledger's cover opened like an eye. Transparent doors appeared throughout the room. Behind them stood figures that did not belong to the ordinary world.
Jibai tore free and caught Wanxing. His hand pressed against her wound, feverishly warm.
