Jibai called the internal emergency line three times and heard only a busy tone. He checked his watch, tore the tracker from his jacket, and crushed it beneath his shoe. “Has the company abandoned me?” Wanxing asked. “The company is waiting.” “For what?” “To see how wide you open the door when you're cornered.” Scratching surrounded the house. Faceless figures appeared at both ends of the lane—at least twenty. Jibai shoved the Zero Ledger into Wanxing's backpack and pulled her toward the kitchen. “The back door is covered,” she said. “Then we use a door that doesn't exist.” He smeared her blood across the wall. Transparent doors reappeared, all locked.
