Chapter Four: Turning Whispers into Evidence

The day after PAN announced its next cycle, Lu declined a trade that sounded certain. GridMall's weary merchant kept complaining, “Returns are piled up at Pier Seven, but they're still setting off fireworks outside.” Publicly, GridMall had just reported record festival sales, and its shares were up six percent before the open. The obvious response to the whisper was to buy puts. Lu did not. He asked Tang to retrieve port volumes, merchant refunds, and advertising bids. Returns had risen, but mostly in one low-margin category; repeat purchases by core merchants had improved. The voice was telling the truth. The conclusion it invited could still be false.
