I only remember that someone asked me to give this to you when you saw No-Light Alley.” He handed Shen a card bearing five typewritten rules: ONE: NO-LIGHT ALLEY HAS NO LIGHTS. IF YOU SEE A LIGHT, CLOSE YOUR LEFT EYE. TWO: DO NOT READ THE DOOR NUMBERS. THE NUMBERS REMEMBER THOSE WHO READ THEM. THREE: IF SOMEONE ASKS WHO YOU ARE ONCE, YOU MAY LIE. IF THEY ASK TWICE, DO NOT ANSWER. FOUR: IF A FAMILIAR VOICE CALLS FROM BEHIND, COUNT ITS STEPS. THE LIVING TAKE TWO STEPS PER BREATH. FIVE: BEFORE LEAVING, SET AN EMPTY CHAIR FOR YOUR SHADOW.
