“Your mother left you an address,” Wanqing murmured.
“Or a trap.”
“Will you go?”
“Yes.”
Bai Yi seemed to have been waiting for that answer. “Before you do, the second trial must begin.”
At midnight, the bronze bell rang in the main hall. Servants placed a black wooden box before each candidate. In the basement, the rain register turned its own page and wrote two new words: TRIAL OF PROFIT.
Lu Henian announced the rules. “Within twenty-four hours, each of you will receive something capable of changing your life. Whoever accepts will receive a rain token. The candidate with the most tokens may order one other candidate to withdraw.”
