The pitch was clean and seductive: machine learning for small-business workflow transformation, a potential future giant with a billion-dollar aura before it had earned one. Everyone else saw a story. Darren saw a time gap. Inside the appendix, one tiny note stood out: the company’s quarterly “subscription cash receipts” did not track its reported customer growth. In his experience, that usually meant one of two things. Either customers were paying badly, or revenue was being recognized aggressively enough to break bones later. He opened a spreadsheet and started stacking public filings, anonymous employee tips, procurement cycles, customer reviews, and third-party payment timing. Line by line, the shape became clear.
