Chapter Five: A Call from the Forgotten

Cheng Cheng's apartment no longer recognized her. The lock called her an unregistered visitor. The owner field contained asterisks. Her couch, dirty cups, and half-dead mint plant remained inside, but none could identify who owned them. Cheng Ye opened a hidden road through the water-meter cabinet. Cheng Cheng sat on her bed and called the hospital. “I'm Cheng Cheng, chief ER resident.” “We have no doctor by that name.” “Employee number 0716.” “That position is vacant.” She called the family of the boy she had revived. His mother thanked her for knowing the details, then asked, “Who are you?” Cheng Cheng put down the phone. “I believe you now.”
