The server demanded the ring. Shen placed the Evernight data case on its reader instead. The case contained four trusts' forged Shen credentials and used the same obsolete handshake. The machine accepted the counterfeit master and released an offline chip.
It held a Tidal Protocol operations log. The latest editor was HE_LINCHUAN. His account had been active three minutes earlier.
He was alive.
At zero, investigators' footsteps sounded above. Su opened a maintenance shaft to the river. Before leaving, Shen found an unsent line at the bottom of the log:
