Shen Yao woke in a city without signs. The underside of real Linchuan formed its sky. Trains crossed the transparent vault above, while footsteps rumbled like distant thunder. Shops sold forgotten things: a key no one remembered saving, an apology never sent, the intended name of an infant who had not survived. The citizens had no faces. They lowered their heads and smelled the ring around Shen Yao's wrist. "A named one," they whispered. One road brightened on her map: YESTERDAY STREET. Every window played one of her yesterdays—pouring water for a patient, holding Zhou Jiming's hand, declaring at Pier Seven that she had lived today. The scenes grew older, then ended abruptly seven years ago.
