Chapter Five: My Mother No Longer Knew Me
He raised the ticket and pointed to the restored number.
“She has a son who is winning himself back.”
Outside, Lin called his mother. She still did not know him, but just before hanging up she said, “Your voice sounds like a child I used to dream about.”
Lin swallowed his tears.
Su offered no empty consolation. She tore her own name from the list. “Take my proof next. You have nothing left to lose.”
Lin looked at her. “No. I still have the right to decide who you are.”
Beside the faded 12, the number 19 had begun slowly turning gray.
