Chapter One: The Midnight Screening Never Ended

Several patrons sat unconscious inside, matching maps spread across their knees. “Gu Wen,” the projectionist said, offering his hand. Lin did not take it. In one corner of his map, fresh ink formed a child’s handwriting: DO NOT LET HER FILM THE ENDING. “Who is she?” Gu looked at Lin’s knee. Her skirt had been torn. Beside the old scar, a fresh crescent wound bled. “You should know better than I do.” At 3:17 that morning, Lin woke in her apartment. Her shoes were muddy. A brass tack lay in her fist. Beside the bed was a screenplay she had never seen, its cover bearing no author’s name—only a sentence: THIS FILM IS BASED ON THE TRUE MEMORIES OF LIN MO.
