Five days before the worldwide release, the city began speaking lines from the film. The first reported case was a breakfast vendor. After saying it, he remained frozen until the next customer entered, then repeated the exchange from the beginning. By noon, seven shops had changed signs. A pharmacy had become White Deer Photography. A darkroom lamp glowed behind the bank windows. The hospital’s side entrance bore a blue enamel plate: 14 OAK STREET. Pedestrians ignored the changes as if they had always been there.
