Chapter Four: Everyone Has a Line
Five days before the worldwide release, the city began speaking lines from the film.
The first reported case was a breakfast vendor. He handed over a cup of soy milk and smiled. “Rain remembers footprints for the house.” It was Shen Qing’s line at minute twenty-three. After saying it, he remained frozen until the next customer entered, then repeated the exchange from the beginning.
By noon, seven shops had changed signs. A pharmacy had become White Deer Photography. A darkroom lamp glowed behind the bank windows. The hospital’s side entrance bore a blue enamel plate: 14 OAK STREET. Pedestrians ignored the changes as if they had always been there.
