"Your mother said the same."
Minglan went pale. Wei'an laughed. "Then let us compete fairly. Sister has hired a pianist. I can buy him."
Afterward, he cornered Shen Yan on the terrace and offered a check for exactly four hundred and eighty thousand.
"Teach her to play one wrong note at the banquet."
"You investigated me."
"So did my sister. I simply don't pretend it means I care." Wei'an lit a cigarette. "Everyone here lies. You need money. I need one word of approval from my father. Why shouldn't we trade?"
Shen Yan refused the check. Wei'an slipped it into his coat anyway.
"Keep it. Your creditors are coming up the mountain tonight. Eventually, you will choose a side."
The power failed before midnight.
