Hannah thanked indemnity. Priya thanked enemies for market education. Ethan thanked his parents and almost got through it without his voice breaking.
Later, Nora found him away from the noise, looking toward Queens.
"You did not tell them everything," she said.
"No."
"Will you ever?"
The city moved below them, millions of private futures colliding under indifferent lights.
"If telling protects more than hiding," he said.
Nora leaned on the railing beside him. Their shoulders almost touched. After everything, the almost mattered more than contact.
"That is either wisdom or another beautiful sentence for a terrible thing."
"Probably both."
She smiled, tired and real.
