Chapter Five: The Third Course Prohibition

A hand entered the frame. Future Zhiwei stepped beside her, still wearing her thirty-two-year-old face. “You think a warning will change her?” she asked. Zhixia met her eyes. “No. But whenever my sister sees a prohibition, she first asks who wrote it.” Before the recording ended, Zhixia tapped three times, paused, then tapped twice. Their childhood code meant: read it backward. DO NOT EAT THE THIRD COURSE did not mean stop. It meant do not eat in order. Zhiwei seized the fig but pressed it against the first mirror instead of biting. When salt touched glass, the surface rippled like water. The third memory flowed out in reverse. Zhixia had not merely been drained. She had divided her own name and hidden it among the memories of twelve victims.
