Chapter Three: The Same Wish
They entered the fire stairs. No guards followed. Instead, the director's voice came over the building speakers.
“Teacher Lin, this isn't your first time seeing wishes, or investigating us. Three years ago, you fulfilled one for all of Linchuan.”
She stopped.
“Don't you want to know what the whole city forgot?”
Zhou pulled her downward. The parking-garage gate was closing.
“Is it true?” she demanded.
“Yes.”
“What did I fulfill?”
He waited until the gap beneath the gate was barely high enough to crawl through.
“You wished that an accident had never happened,” he said. “Seventeen people died in it. You were one of them.”
“Then what am I now?”
“A dead woman the world forgot to lose.”
