Chapter One: One Tester Remains
His job was to crash into every wall in the stupidest ways imaginable. Users saw rules and asked how to obey them. Testers asked where they broke.
The shadow to his right marked *true*. The proctor instantly appeared behind it and drove one pale finger into the back of its skull. The shadow convulsed. A piece of its head was scooped away, then replaced with white light.
“Correct answer,” the proctor said warmly. “Cognitive deviation corrected.”
The shadow sat straight again, now identical to all the others.
Lin made a mental note. Rule Two said incorrect candidates would be corrected. It never said correct candidates would not.
Question two: *Pain is useless data and should be eliminated. True or false?*
