"Samples of what?" The technician coughed blood. His voice came out rough. "They call it response compatibility. Don't ask me what it means. I know it's not for people." Ethan's face darkened. Before he could ask more, a red alarm light came on down the corridor. Someone had noticed the breach. "Go," he said, shoving the technician toward Maria. "Get him out." "What about you?" "I'm going down." Maria started to argue, but Ethan was already heading for the shaft door on the other side. Behind it was a semicircular equipment room filled with blinking modular boxes. Each one linked to a different part of the city, as if Grayhaven's arteries had been pinned into a single artificial heart.
