Chapter One: Day 992 on the Bench

The roster announcement would not come until nine. He still had three hours that belonged to the Storm. The rain had stopped. Inside the practice facility, the air smelled of rubber pellets and disinfectant. Lin stood alone before the passing machine and turned it to maximum speed and random direction. Every three seconds it fired. He sprinted, turned, caught, and fell until his fingers went numb. The eighty-seventh ball went wildly off target. Lin launched sideways, hooked its tip with his fingers, and slammed his shoulder into the turf. The ball did not move. “Pretty,” someone called from the stands. Head coach Grant stood in the shadows beside Mara Vega, one of the team’s sports-medicine analysts. Grant did not applaud.
