Yet the paper door, the mole above the girl’s left eyebrow, and the way she bit her lower lip felt familiar at a level deeper than memory.
Su Lan produced an offline evidence card. “The Clocktower suspended me because I investigated Project Cradle. Twelve children took part twenty years ago. Public records say all twelve died in a data-center fire. In the internal list, LM did not stand for your initials. It meant Linkage Model. LM-01 provided cognitive samples. LM-02 underwent personality mapping.”
“She was LM-02?”
“Her file named her Lin Yao. She was born the same day as you.”
Zero suddenly accessed residue in the recording. Though the terminal had no network, its speaker produced a little girl’s voice.
“Big brother.”
Lin froze.
