Shen Yan restored films for a living, and restoration rewarded patience. He soaked curled acetate until it relaxed like old paper. He lifted mold with cotton swabs, hunted faces beneath scratches, and returned light to images everyone else had abandoned. The work suited him. Dead light did not ask why it had been left to die. Near midnight, the Municipal Film Archive was empty except for the white lamp over his bench. A nameless roll of sixteen-millimeter negative had come from a cinema scheduled for demolition. Its leader carried a faded note: “Composition unacceptable. Discard.” He should have gone home. Instead, he threaded it through the inspection viewer and turned the handle.
