Chapter One: The Outtake Speaks

The first frame showed a restaurant. The composition was wrong in a way that made his skin tighten: a girl in a red dress was crushed against the right edge while a vast cracked white wall filled the left, as though the camera had forgotten what it was supposed to see. In the next frames she ate birthday cake alone. Then she looked toward the window and went still. No one entered the shot. But a second shadow climbed the wall. A hand appeared at the lower left, then a wrist holding a wire. Shen stopped turning the handle. The film did not stop. Its sprocket holes caught the teeth of the machine by themselves. The girl rose. The chandelier above her trembled. The wire cut through its fastening hook.
