“What are you doing?” Grace shouted. “Making them think this place is about to blow.” He rolled an abandoned oxygen cylinder up against the door, then dragged a dead heart monitor beside it. When he cut the main feed, the basement dropped into blackness so complete it felt underwater. A second later the lock gave way and the door cracked open. Elias kicked the cylinder out through the gap. The blast was not an explosion, just compressed gas smashing outward. In the confusion, nobody could tell the difference. “Go!” he shouted, grabbing Grace and dragging her into the maintenance corridor. Mia had been taken upstairs to the pediatric observation unit.
