Chapter Four - Heat Comes Through the Walls
One diesel pump had stopped completely. The other was making an unstable, choking hum. The indicator lights on the wall flickered like a heart monitor in distress. Worst of all, someone had tampered with the auxiliary power interface. Fresh scratch marks ringed the screw holes.
"Somebody worked this over," Lucy said.
Nad shook his head hard. "Not me."
"Of course not you," Carl muttered.
Elliot knelt to inspect the wiring. The failure point was too clean to be accidental. It had been loosened in advance, then driven into overload so the unit would fail slowly in the heat. Someone had wanted the loop to look dead before it actually was.
"Can you fix it?" Mara asked.
"Yes," he said. "But I need a bypass feed first."
"From where?"
