Chapter One: The Message After Midnight

Shen was containing a catastrophic data breach. He asked for half an hour. Thirty minutes later, her phone was off. From that night onward, Lin Wan vanished from Linjiang and from his life. He searched stations, hospitals, and every departure record. There was no body and no farewell, only a private message frozen in “sending.” He later joined Island partly because he trusted databases more than people: if someone had existed, traces had to remain. The database had never returned her. He fed Su He's account into an old diagnostic program. There was no scheduled message. Deep in the logs, however, an impossible address pulsed: 127.7.7.0, a loopback address that existed nowhere on the public network. One word repeated behind the port number: SILENT.
