Chapter Three: The Mansion That Ate His Home

At six the next morning, three black vans stopped at the entrance to the urban village. The property manager of Cloud Crown One and an attorney walked through the flooded alley. In front of Lin’s astonished landlord, they bowed. “Mr. Lin, transfer of the penthouse is complete. A delay in the former owner’s trust documents prevented us from notifying you earlier. Our apologies.” The title was genuine. The tax records were genuine. So was an overseas inheritance certificate dated four years earlier. To explain one altered photograph, the world had written an entire chain of cause and effect. The landlord’s cruelty became a flattering smile. Clients who had suspended Lin now called the accusations a misunderstanding.
