Chapter One: The New Repository

Her voice came softly through the speaker. “Zhouzhou, it's getting dark. Come home for dinner.” The office suddenly felt enormous and empty. He stopped the video. The webpage updated again. `At 1:20, Shen Zhou wonders: what if this is not a record, but something else?` He had not wondered that. Not until he read it. Rain tapped densely against the windows. He pulled the network cable, but the page still refreshed. He closed the browser, opened the local README, and found the same sentence waiting there. Processes, connections, permissions—he checked them all. Nothing was wrong. The file seemed to predict him, or to force him into lines it had already written. He dealt with fear the way he knew best: he tried to reproduce it.
