Chapter Five: The Unrecordable
Jonas crushed the recorder beneath his heel.
Henry grabbed for its memory card. Jonas kicked his hand aside, but Evelyn struck the tour director behind the knee with her cane, and Amara pinned him down. Lin recovered the card. It was cracked and strangely warm.
“Who is Sabine?” she asked.
“My daughter.”
Twelve years ago, sixteen-year-old Sabine had taken a summer job aboard Opal Travel's first Eurydice. After a low-water diversion, she and eleven guests vanished. The company called her a runaway, paid Jonas to sign a nondisclosure agreement, then offered him employment.
“They said if I served as recorder for twelve circuits, she would be returned.”
“Which circuit is this?”
“The twelfth.”
