Chapter Three: The Miracle List
The wafer held one directory: MIRACLE. Eleven numbered files matched Zhou’s dead. The twelfth was LIN_XIAN. Each contained two vital-sign records. One continued after rescue; one ended at the instant of disaster. A silver marker joined them beside the same notice:
RESIDUAL-LINE SETTLEMENT WINDOW: 72 HOURS.
Lin’s record was live.
PRIMARY SURVIVAL: 91%.
RESIDUAL SYNCHRONIZATION: 34%.
ESTIMATED SETTLEMENT: 64:11:08.
“These aren’t medical records,” Zhou said, enlarging a device code. “They’re load tests.”
A hidden project memo explained the rescues. Near a disaster, the Weaver sensed neighboring possibilities not yet fully separated. His “phase web” exchanged outcomes: in one, the victim died; in another, he arrived in time.
