Chapter Three: The Deleted Screenwriter

Three knocks sounded. Xiaoman stood outside, identical to Lin’s childhood photograph. Rain dripped from her cropped hair. She cast no shadow, but wore a crew badge: SCREENWRITER—LIN MO. “Sister is wrong about one thing,” Xiaoman said through the door. “You weren’t written back.” She pressed her palm against the wood. It bulged inward like a screen. “You are the one who was written out.” Lin inserted the key. It fit perfectly and turned both ways: one toward the apartment corridor, the other toward the movie’s Oak Street. Remembering the warning, she did not open the door. Instead she asked, “What is the film’s final shot?” Xiaoman’s smile faltered. Qiao stopped crying.
