Chapter Five: Each Sister Remembers Half
The screen showed his father’s final night. Qiao had not locked him in. He locked the booth from outside after pushing both girls toward the escape route, then stayed to cut Reel Seven.
Gu walked toward the image as if to replace him. Lin grabbed him and struck an invisible edit point. Qiao raised her camera to smash the projector.
Zhou Jibai stepped out of the screen in his uncreased modern suit.
“Don’t,” he said. “Your mother already tried that.”
Behind him, Shen Qing raised an axe. Qiao’s camera rose in the same motion.
“The machine didn’t stop you aging,” Lin said. “Every replay restores you to the same version.”
Zhou smiled. “Reality permits contradictory testimony. Film is kinder. It preserves the easiest ending.”
