"Your phone lit up in the conservatory," she said. "Next time you hide a secret, disable your notifications."
"You can go back."
"That is my badge."
"You gave it to me."
"Which makes it my responsibility to keep you from trading it for your death."
The water beneath the tower sounded closer than before. Behind the burned car stood an iron door with a nightingale-shaped recess. The badge fitted. Its thirteen grooves clicked one by one, and the door opened inward.
Beyond it lay a low-tide tunnel descending beneath the cliff.
