Chapter Four: The Driver in the Mirror
Newspaper clippings from twenty-one years ago covered the stone: three subjects missing after an accident in a Gu-funded "musical memory therapy" project. In the last photograph, a young Shen Qinghe stood beside the Nightingale, holding a boy of about seven.
Shen Yan recognized the burn on the boy's wrist.
It was his own.
Footsteps approached. The man from Han's secret—the one who was still alive—emerged from the darkness. His hair was gray, half his face badly burned, a press card hanging from his neck.
"Give me the badge," he said. "I can save your friend."
Shen Yan closed his fist around it. "Who are you?"
"Xingyao's father."
