Chapter Five: One Lie Across the City
The Linjiang Municipal Archive had no windows.
It resembled a gray safe beneath the slogan HISTORY IS NEVER LOST. Mingjing Technology had upgraded it so every page was scanned to the cloud, then shredded and burned within twenty-four hours.
Tang learned that Zhao's evidence was first in tonight's batch. She set up a stream across the street while Wen and Lu entered beneath a paper-delivery truck.
“Three hundred twelve cameras,” Wen said. “How many can you fool?”
“Yesterday, twelve. I haven't tested today.”
“Tell me the answer before you die.”
Lu laughed and took her hand. She tried to pull away, but he wrote in her palm: Mint. Red umbrella. Don't forget me.
“Anchors,” he said.
She left her hand in his. “Sweat erases writing.”
