Chapter Five: One Lie Across the City
“Then I'll write it again.”
They entered the scanning hall. Mechanical arms turned case files while a giant wall displayed traffic, hospital, and commercial feeds. Lu saw the same timestamp on each: 21:08:13.
Every person in every image blinked together.
“The loop Ma Cheng used,” Lu said. “He didn't invent it. The whole city's footage aligns here every night.”
Wen opened a data cabinet. It held no drives, only a white chip engraved MÍROR. The instant she touched it, her eyes lost focus.
A woman's voice came from her throat. “Administrator Seven: recover anomalous node Lu Chen.”
Her blade missed his neck by a breath.
Lu dodged the next strike, crushed a mint between his teeth, and seized her wrist. “Look at me. You said pain was your anchor.”
