He had been a senior engineer on Myriad's behavior-prediction team, responsible for a feature called vulnerability. Loneliness, insomnia, heartbreak, debt—undignified human conditions compressed into decimals that predicted when a person was easiest to keep scrolling. He objected, then downloaded experiment records to report the practice. Before he could send them, the company accused him of stealing data. Qiongjing fired him. The industry blacklisted him. His fiancée moved out with her cat. Now he repaired databases for small shops and kept three unpaid electricity bills beside his keyboard. He had not come to celebrate the release. He wanted to prove Qiongjing had published a painted corpse.
